How CountBusinessDays treats US federal, Canadian, and Indian national holidays when counting business days.
Most tools include a Holiday Selection control with four options:
Your choice is remembered in this browser and shared across tools. Custom holidays always apply on top of the selected national set.
We follow the common U.S. federal holiday schedule used for banks and many federal offices. Fixed-date holidays that fall on a weekend are observed on the nearest weekday:
| Holiday | Rule |
|---|---|
| New Year's Day | January 1 (observed if weekend) |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | 3rd Monday in January |
| Washington's Birthday | 3rd Monday in February |
| Memorial Day | Last Monday in May |
| Juneteenth | June 19 (observed if weekend) |
| Independence Day | July 4 (observed if weekend) |
| Labor Day | 1st Monday in September |
| Columbus Day | 2nd Monday in October |
| Veterans Day | November 11 (observed if weekend) |
| Thanksgiving Day | 4th Thursday in November |
| Christmas Day | December 25 (observed if weekend) |
State holidays, local holidays, and the day after Thanksgiving are not included unless you add them as custom holidays.
We use national (federal) Canadian holidays. Fixed-date holidays that fall on a weekend use the same observed-day rule as the U.S. set (Saturday → Friday, Sunday → Monday).
| Holiday | Rule |
|---|---|
| New Year's Day | January 1 (observed if weekend) |
| Good Friday | Friday before Easter Sunday |
| Victoria Day | Monday on or before May 24 |
| Canada Day | July 1 (observed if weekend) |
| Labour Day | 1st Monday in September |
| National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | September 30 (observed if weekend) |
| Thanksgiving | 2nd Monday in October |
| Christmas Day | December 25 (observed if weekend) |
| Boxing Day | December 26 (observed if weekend) |
Provincial holidays (e.g. Family Day, Civic Holiday) are not included by default. Add them under Custom Holidays if you need them.
India has a mix of fixed national holidays and major festivals whose dates change each year. Our calculators include:
| Holiday | Date |
|---|---|
| Republic Day | January 26 |
| Independence Day | August 15 |
| Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday | October 2 |
| Christmas Day | December 25 |
Because many Indian festivals follow lunar or regional calendars, we maintain a year-by-year lookup table for major observances commonly treated as national or widely observed holidays, including for example:
Exact dates are stored for each year from 2024 through 2034. Outside that range, only the fixed national holidays (and Good Friday via the Easter calculation) are available unless you add others as custom holidays.
India does not use the same “observed on nearest weekday” rule as the U.S. and Canada for these dates; the listed date itself is treated as the holiday.
You can add company, regional, or personal holidays on the Custom Holidays page. They are:
Clearing site data or using another device will not carry these holidays over.
Across this site, a business day is a day that is:
Calendar days count every day in the range, including weekends and holidays.
When a result is adjusted because a target fell on a weekend or holiday (for example pay dates), the calculator notes the reason—such as the holiday name—whenever possible.
